If you’re feeling like you’re a little stuck or uninspired, grab a book. It can be any type of book but I love self-development books. Reading helps us grow and use our mind far beyond the capacity of day to day. It will help to unlock your imagination and spark ideas that seem buried under darkness. Here are the top three books that changed my everything in 2017. They each played a monumental role in my pursuit of happiness and the creation of my entire brand. If you are at all yearning for some help in lighting your fire, grab one of these.
Year Of Yes by Shonda Rhimes
If you are not already a firmly planted believer in Shondaland, you are not my people. I’m only half joking. This woman has brought us brilliant storylines that help connect us all on a deeper level. Deeper than, in my opinion, any shows in television history. She has broken rules, boundaries, and glass ceilings. She is easily a cultural icon, handles criticism with grace, and she’s obviously right up there on my hero list. You don’t have to love everything Shonda Rhimes puts out to the world, but I bet you’ll love this.
Here’s why her book, the Year Of Yes, is so important for female entrepreneurs.
She shows you her pieces.
The book follows one of the most powerful women in entertainment and shows you her raw and vulnerable pieces. She takes us on a journey of conquering anxiety, believing in herself, and learning to own her powerful life. The entire time, she makes you believe that you can do every single thing she does.
You will feel empowered to endure. That’s really the hardest part, isn’t it? So many books build you up and make you excited to try. Filling you with hopes and dreams but forgetting about the hard parts. This book fills you with grit.
You need the audiobook.
I will shout this one from the rooftops. Anytime you can get an audiobook that is narrated by the author, jump on it. Even if you prefer good old paper in hand, you need to trust me on this one. You need to hear it in her voice. It absolutely makes the book. I have changed so many minds who were a few chapters in and not feeling the groove of the paperback. She speaks, and writes, with a cadence that is deeply conversational. Whatever you do, I’ll say it one more time, grab the audiobook!
Braving The Wilderness by Brene Brown
Brené Brown has a firm place in my circle of influence. Do I know her personally? Nope! The amazing thing about her is that she is able to make everyone feel like she’s talking directly to you. Like she’s chatting with you over coffee like she would with any of her girlfriends. She takes extremely complex issues surrounding the research of shame and makes them a conversation topic that is easy to follow and hard to deny the strength of. She is bringing light to the very dark corners of our innermost selves.
Here’s why Braving The Wilderness changed the trajectory of my entire life.
She talks about the things we don’t want to talk about
Shame. This is a brutal topic. It is almost always closed behind barricaded, twice locked, doors. It is an emotion that most of us have no idea how it really feels. We don’t even know how to identify shame. Before reading this book? I could not have described shame as it pertains to me and my past. We think of shame as parts of ourselves we would like to hide away, but it is so much deeper than that. I learned that the relationships you form in early childhood can affect you so deeply, that they shape every relationship you will make for the rest of your life. That my sense of never belonging, even though the people around me trying desperately to help me feel wanted, comes from my childhood primal relationships. Not fitting into my core group. Family. It’s deep ya’ll.
Another author narrated audiobook
Seriously! The audiobook not only gives you the opportunity to hear Brené Brown speak to her own research, with her own passion and excitement, but it also gives you incredible excerpts from other talks she has done. Just, get the audiobook. I’m sure the paperback is amazing (all of her other ones have been), but I really have to push you in the direction of audio again on this one.
5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins
Look, sometimes you can have all the good intentions in the world, but lack the drive to make them happen. Sometimes you have the intentions and the drive, but lack the support to follow through. And sometimes you have all the right things, but still get stuck in the getting started stage, this book will bust that stage wide open.
Here’s why you need to read The 5 Second Rule right now.
It’s so damn simple
I’m almost angry with how simple the concept of the book is. But let me tell you, it’s downright brilliant in its simplicity. The magic of Mel Robbins is that she speaks on a level that anyone, no matter what industry or stage of business you’re in, can understand. To that point, you don’t even have to be in business to benefit from this book. It is truly a concept that will help to change your life in all aspects.
The book is laid out with the explanation of the rule. The research behind why it works. Additional suggested rules that help bring the whole method home. And a number of real-life examples from readers and clients that discuss the rule in practice and how it changed their life.
Surprise, there’s an author narrated audiobook
As per usual, I opted for the audiobook as soon as I saw that Mel Robbins herself was the narrator. This audiobook is a little different from most, but a trend that I’m seeing more of. It’s not squeaky clean and edited to perfection. There are snippets of side remarks, moments of pure personality, and even errors. The shock, I know. I didn’t mind it at all, but if those types of things would bother you, I would opt for the paperback on this one.
There is also a journal that you can purchase separately called The 5 Second Journal. While it doesn’t go along with the book, it does help to put the rules and best practices into daily play. If you’re a journal junkie like I am, it’s worth grabbing and playing around with. It’s great for tracking a very specific goal and keeping you accountable.
Inspiration and growth are everywhere. The more you can consume, in terms of knowledge, the greater your chance of keeping your inner flame fueled.
