It is officially sweater weather here in Calgary which means it is only a matter of time until everyone around us gets hit with their first fall cold. Since Canadian schools head back to the classroom in early September, we have the added bonus of schoolyard germs hitting households around the same time. Basically, it’s a perfect storm for runny noses, chest congestion, and generally miserable feelings. So, how do you prevent fall colds?
Luckily, I have a few tips up my sleeve to help keep you and your family cold free this fall (and a few to help those tip proof colds kick the dust a little quicker). So here we go, my favourite tips for keeping the sniffles at bay.
Start before it starts

Let’s break it down.
Get enough sleep
This one is so important, and really often overlooked until it’s too late. You must sleep. Especially if we are talking about the first few weeks of a new school year. Your kids and yourself need to not only stay on schedule but need to get a little more sleep to help your body adjust. Everyone has a different requirement when it comes to sleep, but most of us are falling short of what our bodies actually need. So do your best to go to bed early. One less show at night could make all the difference in trying to prevent fall colds.

Embrace the old
Those old wives tales, you know the ones, there was truth in them once. Take a page out of the past and embrace a few wise pieces of advice. Stay hydrated. Drink tea with lemon and honey (lemon thins mucus and honey is an antibacterial). Sweat out the germs (exercising not only encourages cell regeneration but also helps promote an overall healthy lifestyle). And don’t go outside with wet hair

My go-to favourites to diffuse when trying to prevent fall colds are :
This is my favourite blend. Made up of wild orange peel, clove bud, cinnamon leaf, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus leaf, and rosemary leaf/flower essential oils, it smells like fall. It helps to purify the air, support a healthy immune system and respiratory function
I feel like this is the most overlooked and underused essential oil. It has amazing super powers for purification
Now here is an oil that always makes you feel like you’re breathing easier. You’ll know the smell right away. Smells a bit like grandmas house. Be careful with this guy though, a little goes a long way (and keep it away from your eyes).
Also known as melaleuca, which I didn’t know until last year, this one is an oldie but a goody. Basically, if you’re into natural cleaners, you already have this on hand and know that it’s an amazing cleanser for your home (and your yoga mat). Diffusing it is a great way to promote feelings of clean breathing.
Other than smelling fresh and clean, this is another oil that helps to cleanse and purify the air. It gives a great feeling of uplifting cheer as well, which can be helpful on the grey days of fall.
