Hey, everybody, it’s Candace Rusling from Monk and Mills and you are listening to the Unapologetically Bold podcast where we take great big topics dealing with mindset, that really plague of the female entrepreneur and we break them down into bite-size and tangible pieces. This week on episode number 9 we are talking about abundance versus scarcity.
Now I know that when we hear the phrase abundance mindset we often think about abundance rituals and really trying to manifest money into our lives. And let me begin by saying, girl, that is not what abundance mindset is. Let me break it down for you. Abundance mindset is not blindly trusting that the universe has your back. And let’s talk about what it is. It is believing in your heart of hearts down to your core that there is enough for everyone. Whether you call it Big Magic or the universe or the Lord and our saviour or whatever speaks the most to your soul. I want you to understand that abundance doesn’t hand them the responsibility for your success. Abundance still means you have to work but it also means that everybody around you is capable of succeeding while you succeed.
Ok, this will make more sense if I explain what scarcity is. People who operate within a scarcity mindset truly believe that there is not enough. That there are not enough seats at the table. What they are doing is not trying to break you down. That’s not their goal, their goal is not to stop other people from succeeding. Their goal is to succeed. And they truly believe that in order to succeed they must get there first and so they are operating from fear. Fear that there is not enough. Fear that they need to prevent others from taking their place. And that’s where the mindset shift really comes in. When you start to think about it that way.
So take for instance if you’re in business and you’re in an environment where a lot of people are all trying to climb up the same compensation plan and you look at this woman beside you and she’s doing amazing great things and you want to be her cheerleader. You Want to be very proud of her but in the back of your head, you are jealous. Of course, that is a raw human emotion. You can be jealous of someone else’s success. But what is so common in every industry. Is cheering for someone right up until the point that they pass you and then turning around and hating on them to everyone you can find.
I talk about this a lot with my real life friends, or I guess my internet life friends, but I like to always say it’s easy to cheer for the underdog. It is exceptionally difficult to continue cheering for someone who is already winning.
Chairs or Stars
So if you put that into perspective, I want you to think about a table with a bunch of chairs and there are only so many seats at the table. Most people view success as a limited opportunity. They view success as something that can only happen to a certain number of people around them. Because there are only so many seats at the proverbial table. This is how we get into that scarcity mindset.
So to change it and to shake it up for ourselves think about success as the great vast open endless expanse of the universe. So wide open that it has an infinite number of stars. OK, now each one of those stars is a person who has achieved their goal. Their personal idea of success. You see the more stars there are the further we can go. The further we can explore, the deeper we get into the boundaries of the universe. The more stars there are the brighter the path out there becomes. The more stars there are the more likely we are to succeed.
Because if the stars represent success, the more people who are successful, the further along people around you get down the path. All that means is there is more path to follow. There is more light along the way and there is likely a much greater chance of you getting further down it than you ever thought you could. Further out into the universe of success.
So if there is truly space for everyone to succeed you have to believe that each success gives a greater likelihood to your own achievement. And the thing is that if we can get everybody around us believing in the true definition of the abundance mindset. If we can get all of the entrepreneurs around us believing that, if we all succeed, we all go a little bit further. Then, if the person beside you goes further than you do, if they are a believer in abundance, they will turn around and help you out. Because they believe there is space for everyone. We can compete but we can grow, we can have friendly rivalries, but at the end of the day the help is always there. We are always rooting for each other to go a little bit further.
That’s it for us today, but before I go, I’m going to leave you with one question. I want you to think about it really hard. Don’t answer out of defensiveness. Don’t answer how you think you should. But really think about, are you operating from a place of abundance or are you stuck somewhere in the realm of scarcity? A lot of us get stuck there and it’s totally okay as long as you recognize it. And know, that if you want to succeed, and I mean truly succeed, and go further than you ever thought you possibly could. Then you need to embrace abundance. And you’ll get there.
